Hosting students is simple and easy. To make it even more convenient, here is a list of tips to ensure that you have a pleasant experience:
Cultural Exchange: Please make sure that you have an open mind to all cultures -- different cultures have different customs and you must keep this in mind when engaging in cultural exchange.
Communication: Many of our Intensive English Program student speak little English so if your student is enrolled in an IEP Program, please be sure to speak slowly when addressing him/her and if they still do not understand you, try writing it down. Sometimes reading English is much easier than listening/speaking for our students.
House Rules: Be sure to post your house rules inside the student's bedroom (it is usually posted behind the door). If you do not post the rules, please hand a copy to the student directly. This will help them to understand exactly what you allow and don't allow and will avoid conflict between you and your student. USH does provide a list of sample house rules.
Adjustment Time: In the rare event that you feel that there is not a good match between you and your student, please wait about 4-5 days after their arrival to give them time to adjust and see if the placement works out--usually all it needs is a little time for you to get used to each other. But should you still be unhappy after this time, give us a call and we will help you either straighten out the situation or move/replace your student.
Payment: If you do not receive your host payment within 7-10 days of your student's arrival, give us a call and we will put a stop payment on the previous check we sent and re-send it.
Should you have any questions or need any assistance, please give us a
